At this moment, preparations are being made to fork Goerli: the final Ethereum testnet before mainnet changes from PoW to PoS. The Merge is fast approaching. Since the 2014 white paper release, the community and broader ecosystem have been eagerly anticipating Proof of Stake. At last, the PoS Beacon Chain is expected to replace PoW in mid-September 2022.

New Home of the Heart is an NFT exhibition & sale to celebrate the upcoming Ethereum Merge. This project is a collaboration between Stateful Works and JPG, co-curated with Sofía García (artxcode, Art Blocks). Any ETH proceeds will be split between core devs via the Protocol Guild, the participating artists, and the organizers. Learn more about the Protocol Guild here: a collective of 116 Ethereum core contributors who work on projects like the Merge.

We will announce the participating artists and opening date soon - subscribe to this blog and follow Stateful Works and JPG for the latest updates!

Rough outline for an experimental new funding tool which provides recruitment, retention, and reward mechanisms of core protocol contributors - read the full proposal here.

Over the past year, Stateful Works has pushed the boundary on how to simultaneously accrue cultural and financial capital to protocol maintainers:

  • Beacon Book: a multimedia project about the launch of the Beacon Chain from the perspective of its contributors, including NFTs, the digital text, and a physical book. Has raised ~110 ETH to date. Started in Dec 2020, launched July 2021
  • 1559 NFT Series: an NFT with 1559 editions, and a 1/1 which was auctioned off. Raised ~278 ETH directly to the contributors for EIP-1559. Started in May 2020, launched in July.

The 1559 NFT Series was an experiment to celebrate the EIP-1559 Contributors which launched on July 21st, 2021. Learn more about the inspirations in the launch post here.

For over two years now, EIP-1559 has been in active development. In that time, dozens of people and over five development teams have worked to specify, audit, implement, test and communicate this highly-anticipated upgrade to Ethereum’s fee market.

Throughout this process, the community has been incredibly supportive. We've seen a massive grassroots movement emerge, consistently eager to contribute time, resources, and funds to get this EIP across the finish line and deployed on mainnet. With the London hard fork scheduled for August 3-5, we are now in the final stages of this process.

Shaping Positive Outcomes

Despite recent progress, challenges remain for the maintainers of Ethereum Public Goods. The people who choose to work on them often have a very high opportunity cost and limited methods available to capture the upside from their work.

July 2nd, 2021

This post contains the complete text of the Beacon Book: a collection of perspectives from 46 researchers and implementers that worked on the Ethereum Beacon Chain. We hope you enjoy reading it! Join our discord if you'd like to discuss.

  1. The crowdfund for 100 physical prints concluded on Aug 3rd. See the results here.

  2. In addition to the text, the book also features 7 full-spread illustrations, which can be minted as editional NFTs of varying exclusivity. They are placed below according to their position in the printed book. Only 10 full Genesis Edition sets (NFTs 1-7) can be minted. Check out this post for an exploration of the book's Graphics and Narratives.

  3. In line with the goals set in our Dec. 2020 announcement, any ETH from NFT minting and the auctions goes directly to the contributors that made the book possible: see the Split Contract here. Please note that minting NFTs does not grant access to the printed books, nor should it be construed as an investment of any kind. This is a community based project.

Own a piece of Ethereum history

As promised in our December announcement post, Stateful Works has partnered with a bunch of amazing Ethereum community orgs to help launch the Beacon Book.

If you're just learning about this project, it's a collection of perspectives from 46 Beacon Chain researchers and implementers, wrapped in delightful graphics. We're giving away seven physical copies ahead of the main auction happening in a few weeks: one for each of their respective communities. They will decide how to give them away - we're looking forward to the novel mechanisms they will each use!
